Poutine may have been invented by Canadians (Quebecois, really) as a way to soak up excess Molson between hockey games. But topping our northern neighbor’s single greatest culinary invention with Pennsylvania’s favorite regional meat is Philly’s goddamn genius.
Poutine — the Canadian specialty involving gravy and cheese curds atop fries — will meet a South Philly cheesesteak on Thursday, Sept. 28 as part of a guest-chef series at Pat’s King of Steaks to benefit Spread the Wiz Foundation.
Poutinerie Shoo Fry is headed to Mark Zuckerberg’s favorite cheesesteak shop today for a poutine-cheesesteak mashup — and it’s all for charity. Shoo Fry owners Matt and Rachel Baiadaare joining Pat’s King of Steaks’ guest chef series to raise money for the Spread the Whiz Foundation, which, basically, teaches kids to not eat cheesesteaks for every meal. Or poutine, for that matter.
What could possibly make the cheesesteak — Philly’s melty, messy unofficial foodstuff — even more indulgent? How about the addition of cheese curds and gravy?
And you can taste for yourself starting at noon today, when the French fry wizards from Shoo Fry will be serving up a collaborative poutine cheesesteak at Pat’s King of Steaks.
Canadian-inspired poutine is the jumping-off point at this Rittenhouse fast-casual, offering a dozen varieties that range from classic curds and gravy to creamed chipped beef and a breakfast-y scrapple and egg option. Sliders and shakes round out the decadent menu, all served in a cozy, subterranean space lined with reclaimed wood.
The “Breakfast Sliders” will run you $2.50 and come in four varieties (bacon, egg and cheese; scrapple, egg and cheese; cheesesteak, egg and cheese; and pork roll, egg and cheese). The hash browns are five bucks and will be offered in three styles, rotating daily, but including options like the “Scrapple Jawn” (pretty sure you can guess what’s in that), the “Sugar Shack” with bacon, maple syrup and powdered sugar, and the “Shoo On A Shingle” with creamed chipped beef.
Shoo Fry – Poutine, Philly style is the name of the game at this belowground build-your-own fries bar. Fries come covered in cheese curds and gravy, slathered in steak and Cheez Whiz, topped with scrapple, cheddar and an egg.
